DIYs: Done

Well, I've made some bracelets from jersey scraps (ignore the scary monster nails)...

I finished a cowl. It's the scrunchable scarf pattern with the ends sewn together.

I refashioned a dress shirt (details on that in another post)...

...and my sister made a shirt with my tutorial! Didn't she do a great job? I used a strip of the fabric to make one of my bracelets. ;) Speaking of that very cool, stripey fabric, it was only $2.39 a yard.

DIY: No Sew Crop Top Tutorial

Yay! Easy tutorial today...

A crop top!

It's really easy and fun to make. You can wear it off the shoulder, cut off the sleeves to make a tank top, wear it over a camisole--it's a very versatile piece. My sister made one too (she's modeling the black shirt). Then we went and had a photo shoot, haha...

Except it didn't exactly work out. We always start goofing around and we run out of poses. Like in this photo shoot:

I can't believe I actually posted this picture (and I know, the outfit choice isn't the best).

Anyways...

Materials: size L men's shirt and scissors

1. Cut off the neckband and sleeve hems.

2. Rotate the shirt so that the side seams/folds line up.

3. Cut a slope to make a high-low hem, making the shirt cropped in the front (or you can just cut straight across).

Yep, that's it. Easy.

We liked stretching and curling all the edges, and we also thought cuffing the sleeves looked better (I might tack down the cuffs with some stitches, but for now I just fold them).

That's it! You're done. Now go find some big tees that don't fit.

Luggage

A little while ago I got some ticking, and now I'd love to make myself a ticking overnight bag; maybe with some p/leather handles (even though it seems difficult to sew with). A ticking bag would look so cool! And vintage-y. So I've found some bags I like, and if you've seen some you like, tell me!

I love overnight bags. I feel like I'm going on an adventure. I especially love the look of doctor/carpet/Marry Poppin bags.

Almost Here...

What's here, you ask? (and even if you don't ask I'm gonna pretend you did) Why, Easter of course! It's tomorrow! We died some eggs yesterday. Fun! :) We drew on them with crayon, did some tie-dye, stripes, polka dots, etc.

My favorite egg. The colors aren't egg-xactly accurate (lame pun, I know).

Inspiration: Blanket Jacket

It's been cold and rainy lately. So I'm being inspired by comfy, loose coats and jackets. Specifically the blanket jacket. They seem so cozy and warm--like a Snuggie that people can take you seriously in (not that I'm dissing the Snuggie or anything. I want one. I just, y'know, wouldn't wear it to school. I would wear a blanket jacket to school, though). So here are some jackets I like; not necessarily 'blanket jackets,' but just some that have caught my eye.

Racerback Tank w/ Hanky Hem Tutorial

Look! Made myself a new tank this weekend! And guess what? I topstitched my binding! Aren't you proud of me? It looks very pro now. Plus, I made a little tutorial for the cool hanky hem. You can tell I like drape. Based off of this tank (via).

Athleta: $39

Materials: 1 yard of jersey, scissors, sewing machine, thread, etc. You know the drill.

1. Make a racerback tank using Anna at Noodlehead's method. I have a tutorial also, but (typing fast so I won't lose my courage and not write the following sentence) her tutorial is better. Yep, there, I said it. So anyways, follow her tutorial, but don't sew the side seams yet. I did my tank a bit differently; I sewed the shoulder on one side of the tank together, bound the neckline using this method, and then bound the armholes using the same method. The construction was a bit like in this tutorial . Remember: DON'T SEW THE SIDE SEAMS YET.2. Cut out 4 right triangles. Or cut 2 squares. I think cutting a square would of been easier and it might've draped better, but it was too late. Plus, I wanted all of the edges to roll the same way, and I was too lazy to figure out how that would work in a square.

Here's an idea of how big the triangles are. I cut them freehand.

So, there are 2 ways to sew the triangles on. I did both versions, one version for each side, but I think this version is easier, so this is what I'm going to share with you.

3. With right sides together, pin the straight side of the triangle to the bottom of your shirt. Sew from the top to the bottom of the triangle. Repeat on the remaining 3 sides.

4. Pin tank, right sides together. Sew sides together. Turn right side out. It looks like... well, a tank top with 2 triangles on the sides. Oh, wait, it is.

5. Cut a small, shallow scoop out of the bottom so that it falls in a drape. You might be able to see that I cut a small dome out of the bottom. I made it a little bigger later. If you are worried about cutting through the seams and having them unravel, go back and backstitch on top of the ends of the seams.

Done! Wear your cool new tank as the warm days approach...

Three Things, plus 2 Others

Haven't shown you this, but I made it back in December when I was obsessed with ear warmers. Mustard bow... I love the color. CO 13 sts with size 10 needles. Original pattern here.

Cherry blossoms--or something like them. They look like it, at least.

This makes me laugh. I love Harry Potter. And have you seen the Hunger Games trailer? It looks sooo good! I hope it is; the only other time I've gotten this excited about a book/movie is Percy Jackson (which, to me, was a disappointment... maybe I'll do a rant on that someday...) and HP7. Actually, I'm sure I've been excited about other book/movies, but I can't remember any. (via)

Top Ten Tutorials of 2011

These, in my opinion, are the best tutorials of 2011. :)

1. Draped circle top- by far the best tutorial (or at least most popular!). Super comfy! I wear this a ton...

2. Slouchy boxy tee-Even though I JUST put this tutorial up Tuesday, I really love it.

My sister's already made one (it's a crop top).

3. T-shirt racerback tank-not my favorite (not even close), but one of the more popular tutorials.

4. Wrap bracelet-I love this bracelet; I wear it a lot.

5. Braided headband-very comfy, stretchy, workout type headband.

 

6. Draped cardigan-a guest post.

7. Shawl pin/barette-made from wire.

8. Paper chain bracelet-used with pretty scrapbook paper.

9. 5-in-1 infinity scarf-soft and cushy cowl pattern with 5 different ways of wearing it.

10. Tunic-this is what I called hip hop style, I guess. Obviously I had no idea what I was talking about. Wait... I still don't know what I'm talking about. Oh well. Just PLEASE ignore how I wrote it. It's pretty embarassing, the kind of post that you REALLY want to delete/severely edit but don't have the heart to. Yep. It's that embarassing. I guess I thought I sounded pretty cool... Not that I'm not, but, y'know...
