Crochet Mason Jar Cozy-Mini Pattern

Hello again! It's been probably a year, but I just felt like doing something creative and decided to share it even if no one reads this blog anymore. I decided to make a mason jar cozy with a lot of scrap yarn lying around after I ordered some EcoJarz lids. They're these adorable lids you can pop on your mason jars so you can bring them on the go. The ones I bought from Amazon also come with stainless steel straws, and I am excitedly awaiting them.

I figured a cozy could protect my hands from hot drinks and prevent a slippery, condensation-y glass. It worked out pretty well, I think!

My basic pattern used a size H hook, worsted weight yarn, and single crochet, as well as a magic loop, single crochet decrease and increase.

The sea foam yarn was Red Heart Soft in, I believe, sea foam, while the raspberry and pumpkin yarn are part of a vintage stash I received as a gift. I'm hoping the cozy will help with breakage, but I'm not sure. Has anyone had an incident dropping a mason jar, with or without a sleeve? I imagine that would be bad and always wonder how people bring around their jars so freely. I'd be worried about shattering it.

Basically, I chained about 26 stitches to see the amount it took to wrap, while stretched, around the jar. Undid those stitches, then started a magic loop. Single crocheted 5 sts and slip stitched the circle closes. Single crochet increased in every second stitch until the circle grew to have 26 stitches. I then added about five increases evenly around so the cozy would fit the larger middle, as I found it was a bit too tight at first. I crocheted to the top of the jar, switching colors for stripes, and then decreased five stitches to fit the tighter, contouring top. Fasten off and done!

It took me maybe 2-3 hours, and if I rated myself as a crocheter from 1-5 (with 1 being beginner and 5 being advanced), I'd consider myself a 2-3. Perhaps a 2.5. I got a lot of help from Ravelry and this site.

I might open an Etsy shop soon with these and some other things!

A Few Things...

Blind Monster Cell Cozy

Yesterday and today I crocheted cell phone cozies! One's in a mustard color, which I didn't get a pic of yet, and the second is for my sister's ipod. It's a teal color if you can't tell in the pictures. I didn't add a face to her cozy yet, though.

I've seen envelope-type cozies like these before, but didn't actually plan on making them till I saw this listing on Etsy.

I'll write instructions on how to make a basic envelope cozy, but you'll have to figure out how to do the arms and legs.

Basically, I chained however many till it could reach around my phone/ipod (make it an even number). Slip stitch into the first stitch so you have a loop. Then I started single crocheting in the round, so basically you're spiraling upwards into a tube. Keep going till it's about an inch and a quarter away from the height of your phone. Now you're making the slit. Divide the number of stitches you chained in half. (example: I had 22 stitches/2= 11) Single crochet that many stitches and stop (you'd crochet 11 stitches if you had 22 stitches). Now chain the half number (you'd chain 11), and single crochet back onto your work (or into the 12th stitch). You should now have a slit in your work. Start crocheting in the round again as usual till it's the height of your phone, along with seam allowance so you can seam the top and bottom. Bind off. Seam top and bottom. Done!

How I Crochet my Doilies

I've been so inspired by lace bib dresses that I've been trying to crochet freestyle doilies. Even though I'm not a very good crocheter. I always skip stitches and overlook them so my finished piece has a ton of increases and decreases and resembles an hourglass. But that's besides the point.

This is how I made my practice doily. It's a half doily, but at the end I'll tell you how to make a circle one. I used US 10 knitting needles and crochet hook w/ DK weight yarn.

CO 10 sts. Knit till it's 2." Now cut the yarn and thread through the stitches. Pull it so that the piece makes a half-circle shape. Tie off. Now I just crocheted around the border with different stitches and patterns (freestyle).

First I single and double crocheted around. Then, to make an eyelet row, I chained 2, skipped 2 sts, and hdc into the 2nd stitch. I did that all around. When I was done, I single crocheted a row.

To make the scalloped border, I chained 3, skipped 3 sts, and dc into the 3rd stitch. I did that all around. Turn work. Now, in each scallop, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, and sc. If you've ever crocheted a flower, then you'll know how to do this.

If you want a circle doily, CO more stitches at the beginning, pull the yarn through the stitches tightly, and sew the two ends together.

Earwarmer, a Bracelet, and Angry Birds

I took out the crochet hook and, with a scrap of gray yarn left over from my infinity scarf, made a little earwarmer. 'Course, I ran out of yarn halfway there, so it might only cover half of my ears. I used a size J hook (i crocheted very loosely), even though I was supposed to use size 15 (was the letter... P?), but I lost my super big crochet hook that I carved myself (sounds impressive, but it's not. It's just this ultra big chopstick with a very rough hook and a skinny tapered end. So it looks like a regular chopstick with some funky hook, obviously carved by someone with no experience. I carved it on the carpet on my bedroom floor with a Swiss army knife).

I also made a macrame bracelet. I thought about giving it away, but it's not very good. If I make something worthy enough for you readers I'll give it away.

And finally, my aunt came back from vacation! And she brought us some... angry birds notebooks and pencils! Aren't they cool? Yes, yes, I think so too...

What I've Been Working On

Here's my bag for my mom for mother's day. It's kind of lumpy and odd shaped since I tried to get it to model by sticking all of our apples inside and hanging it on a chair. Yeah, it didn't really work.

I'm also crocheting! I'm a decent crocheter, but I have to use a large bulky hook I carved out of a chopstick because I can't find my other hooks. Yep, that's just me. (the flower is from attic 24)

Bob-omb Bag

I really love this. I need it. Unfortunately I'm not the best crocheter and I can't find my crochet hook... But I can try. I absolutely love Mario related things. Like my Goomba earflap hat. And once I made a Mario chess set for core class. I'd use this all the time, instead of a purse or bag. That would be so cool to make a giant one for a backpack. Yum... :)
